What’s Involved in the SSI Decompression Diver Course
The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. You’ll learn about decompression theory, gas management, and dive planning. Practical sessions involve executing decompression dives under supervision, ensuring you gain hands-on experience.
- Independently plan and conduct decompression dives in a recreational or sidemount Total Diving System
- To a maximum depth of 40 meters,
- Using a breathing gas with a maximum optimized nitrox blend of 40%,
- For a maximum accumulated decompression time of 15 minutes based on a back gas profile
- With an equally- or more qualified dive buddy.
What Can I Do with My Certification?
Upon completion, you’ll earn the SSI Decompression Diver certification. This certification enhances your diving credentials and allows you to safely conduct decompression dives, expanding your diving opportunities.
Duration
The course typically requires one confined water and three open water dives. The course can typically be completed over two days, providing comprehensive training and practice.
Requirements
- To enrol, you must be at least 18 years old and have the SSI Deep Diver and SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 40 certifications (or equivalent from a recognised training agency).
- A minimum of 24 logged dives is also required.
- If you wish to complete the Decompression Diver course in the sidemount configuration, you must hold the SSI Recreational Sidemount Diver certification (or equivalent).

The course fee covers all necessary diving equipment, instructor fees, and certification costs. Comprehensive learning materials are also provided, but not included.
